FortisOntario Unifies Its SAP and Utility Data in Amazon QuickSight
February 23, 2024

FortisOntario, an Ontario electric utility, was pulling data by hand from several SAP databases, environments and external applications. CONTAX built an AWS data platform that brings this data together and feeds Amazon QuickSight dashboards, so new utility data is ingested daily and FortisOntario makes decisions from one platform.
At a Glance
The Customer
FortisOntario Inc. is a 100% Canadian-owned electric utility headquartered in Fort Erie, Ontario, and has provided transmission and distribution in the province for over a century. It owns and operates Canadian Niagara Power Inc., Cornwall Street Railway Light & Power Company Ltd. and Algoma Power Inc., serving a combined total of approximately 69,000 customers. It also owns regulated transmission assets with approximately 3,460 kilometers of distribution and transmission lines, and meets a peak demand of approximately 257 MW.
CONTAX and FortisOntario have worked together to modernize FortisOntario's IT, starting with the move of its SAP ECC landscape to the AWS cloud.
The Challenge
FortisOntario was pulling data from multiple SAP databases, environments and external applications. Working across all of these cost time, added extra work and led to more errors.
FortisOntario wanted its data on a single platform for reporting and analytics. It considered SAP Analytics Cloud and Amazon QuickSight, and after much consideration chose Amazon QuickSight.
The Solution
CONTAX combined a set of AWS services into a scalable platform for data management and analytics, working with FortisOntario across multiple time zones.
Automated environments
AWS CDK and AWS CloudFormation set up each environment, so the team can deploy and manage resources quickly and repeatably.
Secure connections
AWS PrivateLink keeps connections to AWS services private, protecting sensitive utility data.
SAP data in
Amazon AppFlow brings SAP data in through OData connections.
One data lake
AWS Lake Formation brings data from multiple environments into one data lake.
Data prepared for analysis
AWS Glue and the Data Catalog prepare, organize and map the datasets for ETL, keeping data consistent across sources.
Dashboards
Amazon QuickSight gives FortisOntario custom views, advanced analytics and dynamic dashboards with ML-powered insights.
The CONTAX team dealt quickly with the obstacles that came up during the migration and integration work.
The Results
- Data from multiple SAP environments and external applications on a single platform
- New utility data ingested daily and shown on QuickSight dashboards and reports as it arrives
- Decisions based on the most current information available
- Time and resources saved, with less manual work across systems
"Running multiple databases, environments, and external applications, caused much delay and extra work, leading to more errors. Integrating Amazon QuickSight allowed for seamless data interaction, with real-time results for quicker decision-making adaptabilities."
